Service Description

Let's explore and literally enter the youngest volcanic crater of our island, formed about 15,000 years ago! We will depart on our van from the south coast, passing through the beautiful beaches of "Vila Franca do Campo" before starting the trail, which is certainly one of the most surprising and challenging in the whole island, characterized by a significant elevation gain and length and with narrow dirt and rock uneven paths. "Lagoa do Fogo" hike starts in the charming village of "Trinta Reis" and pass by the ruins of the first power plants of São Miguel, where nature embraces the history and memory of the early days of industrialization in the 19th century. We will then cross a typical azorean rural area. The trail winding through a forest of Japanese Cedars (Cryptomeria japonica) up to a water "levada". If we're lucky, we might see rainbow trout swimming gracefully against the flow of the water. The second part of this hike will introduce us to the native plants of the Azorean flora, hence the reason we're in a protected area. After enjoying the "levada" scenery, we'll enter the lush valley of "Ribeira da Praia", accompanied by migratory seagulls that settle there in April and May to nest. We will then arrive at the beautiful and wild "Lagoa do Fogo" crater, where we'll take a break for a picnic with local regional delights. After the long hike, we’ll be rewarded with a visit to the crystal-clear "Segredo Waterfall", where we’ll have time for a refreshing swim!
